Lynn Tan has more than 20 years of experience as a music educator, nurturing in children and young adults a deep appreciation for music and love for playing the piano. She believes deeply that piano learning should not be viewed primarily as an academic pursuit aimed at chasing qualifications, but more as a pursuit aimed at developing the student’s sensibilities, appreciation, and skill at music. As such, students learn best in an unhurried, nurturing, encouraging yet disciplined environment, where parents, students and the teacher work together as a team.
Lynn obtained her Grade 8 from the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music, UK (ABRSM) at the age of 12. She is a Licentiate with Distinction of the Trinity College of London. She holds a Honours in Pianoforte from the Guildhall School of Music and Drama (UK) and a Diploma in Piano Performance, with High Distinction, from the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music (ABRSM). In recognition of her achievement, she was invited to perform at the ABRSM South-East Asia Diploma Awards Ceremony. She has also been on the judging panel for Steinway Youth Asia Piano Competition (Singapore).
In addition, she holds a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) from the National University of Singapore, and received training in basic counseling and early childhood / adolescence development. Prior to her decision to teach music full time, Lynn had been in government service, including stints as a policy maker in the Ministry of Community Development and a diplomat at the Singapore High Commission to the United Nations in New York (Ministry of Foreign Affairs).
Lynn has had the privilege of attending masterclasses/individual lessons with many esteemed pianists, including board examiners, such as Roy-Wilkinson, Jennifer Purvis, Pamela Lidiard, Andrew Ball, Madeline-Bruser, Dean Karmer, John Lill and Dr Koo Siaw-Sing, as well as Dr. Gordon-Fergus Thompson, when she attended the International Piano Course at the Royal College of Music in London.
Lynn’s background in music, counseling and development provides an ideal nexus that allows her to bring out the best in her students as they study music, not just in terms of technical proficiency, but also in terms of emotional and psychological development. In between developing new teaching programs, techniques and approaches, which she applies at her studio, Lynn Tan Piano Studio, Lynn loves to write about music.
She is the author of “Starting Your Musical Journey”, “Parents’ Voices” and “Singapore Songs: Easy Piano Arrangements for Beginners”, and in addition, has also contributed many articles for various magazines and publications such as Singapore’s Child, Today’s Parents, Young Parents, Parent’s Time, AsianParents Singapore, etc., to share her knowledge of music and teaching expertise with the readership.
Lynn has also been active in other forms of media. Being effectively bilingual, she was interviewed by Mediacorp 95.8FM Capital Radio, who sought her views on the essentials of piano learning from the perspective of students and parents. She produced a short video, ”Our Piano Stories”, which captures the candid sharing of parents of piano students, and the highlights and challenges they faced in their musical journeys.
Lynn’s areas of interest are piano pedagogy, piano performance and early childhood music programs. Aside from these, Lynn also enjoys all things creative: playing and listening to the piano (of course!), Lynn also engages in floral arrangements and dabbles in interior design. She volunteers on an ad hoc basis at social welfare organizations and hospitals.
